Happy Endings
these tulips
at first glance
seem sadly
overcome
by life's burdens.
...but in reflection,
i see
a simple reminder;
to bend,
stretch,
and glimpse life
from new perspectives...
to see wonder
in new ways.
as i passed by my living room this morning, i glanced at the bouquet of tulips i brought home yesterday and felt disheartened that this was to be their sad end...no perky stems of bright colours ablaze in the sunlight, just droopy and tired blossoms.
it disturbed me to the point where i was determined to turn this around in my head. in my annoying pollyannaish way, i wanted to see this from a different perspective. i don't like sad endings to anything...movies, books, relationships...or cut flowers. i'm determined to believe that if the ending is sad, then it hasn't really ended yet...there's more to the story that we haven't yet heard! dead flowers turn to compost to nourish new plants, broken relationships are given the opportunity to find forgiveness ...you get the picture. i know sadness is a part of life, i just don't believe it's the ending.
so i sat and looked at the tulips and found the bending stems gracefully peaceful. i thought of similar paintings that i had seen and realized that a photograph was called for here. as i looked through my lens at the willowy, arching stems, i thought of a ballerina bent over in dance. this in turn led me to feel the soreness and stiffness in my own spine that i've been experiencing lately. flexibility is a wonderful gift, in both the physical body and in the heart and mind.
there was no sadness in their graceful curves, they just had a message for me!
i love happy endings.

Kate what a beautiful post! Love the poem a reminder to bend, physically and mentally. Beauty can be found everywhere….sometimes we just have to look at things differently. You could even cut the heads off and float them in water….Like yourself, I really don’t like unhappy endings for anything….especially movies.

Once again Kate, you make me think! There is a quote "look beyond what is in front of you", and here you have demonstrated the beauty of just that. I absolutely love that you have turned these tulips into a beautiful painting, not just with your image, but with your words as well. Thank you!

I am struggling now with aging, trying to see the good in bad things. My grandmother, 97, slipped and fell 3 days ago. She broke bones in her neck and those only thing that could be done was to put her in a halo. I cannot imagine what she is going through. I will drive south to visit her tomorrow and am trying to give prepare myself for what she will look like and how she is feeling.
anyway, thank you for this post, it was helpful for me in the current moment.

Yes I agree Kate, I believe that life is a circle with no endings and is truly infinite. Its only we humans who try to make everthing finite, with tied up ends. I hate that word `closure', no such thing. Your image of the flowers is beautiful
